The Miami Marlins placed Christian Bethancourt on the bereavement list over the weekend, while Jhonny Pereda, another catcher, was brought up from Triple-A Jacksonville. Bethancourt, aged 32, has a batting average of .162 with one home run and five RBIs in 31 games so far this season.
Across eight seasons in the majors with five different teams, he holds a career average of .227 with 31 home runs and 118 RBIs in 396 games. On the other hand, Pereda, aged 28, had his major league debut on April 17 but went hitless in five at-bats over three games with the Marlins.
Originally part of the Chicago Cubs organization since 2013, Pereda found himself in his 11th minor league season before his call-up earlier in the current season
