Next season, Avery Johnson will start for Kansas State, as everyone already knows. About who the Wildcats will rely on as his backup, much less is known. On Wednesday, though, K-State head coach Chris Klieman may have gotten some answers when Connecticut transfer Ta’Quan Roberson committed.
Having played for both Penn State and UConn, the 5-foot-11 redshirt senior has decided to wrap off his collegiate career in Manhattan. He should battle with Jacob Knuth for the No. 2 quarterback position behind Johnson and provide important depth.
Given his considerable experience edge over every other quarterback on the K-State roster, Roberson would appear to be the favourite to win that position. Johnson himself has only started one game at quarterback in college. Roberson completed 58.3% of his throws last year for 2,075 yards and 12 touchdowns. If Johnson is compelled to miss any games next season for any reason, that kind of output and on-field experience would be useful.
While on campus, he might also tutor aspiring K-State quarterbacks. Roberson had his finest game with the Huskies in a 34-33 loss against Utah State, when he threw for 255 yards and two touchdowns.
A victory over Sacred Heart included 201 yards and four touchdowns for him. Orange, New Jersey native Roberson appeared in eighteen games for Penn State and UConn.
He was considered a top 200 prospect by ESPN and a top 10 quarterback prospect in the class of 2019 by 247Sports and Rivals while he was in high school. With Will Howard and Jake Rubley both deciding to leave following the conclusion of the 2023 season, K-State needed an older quarterback. Even though Roberson is not expected to start the upcoming season, he should assist the Wildcats meet a crucial need.
