The Oklahoma Sooners have secured a significant commitment through the transfer portal from former five-star edge rusher Marvin Jones Jr., as reported by Pete Nakos of On3.
Jones began his college journey with the Georgia Bulldogs before moving to the Florida State Seminoles for the 2024 season. He was ranked as the No. 2 edge prospect in the 2022 recruiting class by 247Sports. During his one season with the Seminoles, Jones accumulated 25 total tackles, six tackles for loss, and four sacks over 11 games. Pro Football Focus noted that he registered 16 total pressures during the season. This marked an improvement compared to his time with the Bulldogs, where he totaled 16 tackles, six tackles for loss, and only two sacks across two seasons. Throughout his college career, he has played 690 snaps.
Jones was previously on the Sooners’ radar when Alex Grinch was the defensive coordinator, and assistant coach Jamar Cain had also shown interest. After the coaching changes, Jones opted to join the then-defending national champion Bulldogs. Current Sooners head coach Brent Venables had also recruited him while at Clemson. Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 255 pounds, Jones boasts impressive size and athleticism for his position. He is poised to immediately enhance a defensive line that is becoming a key strength of the team.
The Sooners are set to lose veteran edge players such as Ethan Downs, Trace Ford, and Caiden Woullard, and will need the development of younger players like Adepoju Adebawore, Danny Okoye, Taylor Wein, Nigel Smith, Wyatt Gilmore, C.J. Nickson, and Alexander Shieldknight. Meanwhile, adding Jones injects valuable collegiate experience and production into their defensive end rotation.
