A 6-foot-8 forward who played for Sacramento State last season, has committed to the Georgia Tech men’s basketball team, as announced by head coach Damon Stoudamire. Powell will have two years of eligibility remaining with the Yellow Jackets.
A former top-100 high school recruit, Powell led the Hornets in scoring with 12.1 points per game and rebounding with 7.0 rebounds per game last season. His rebounding average was sixth-best in the Big Sky Conference, and he shot 49 percent from the field.
He scored in double figures 21 times and had ten games with double-digit rebounds, including five double-doubles. One standout performance was a triple-double with 13 points, 15 rebounds, and 10 assists against Bethesda, marking only the second triple-double in Sacramento State’s Division I history.
Ranked 84th nationally by ESPN in the 2021 high school class, Powell graduated from DeSoto High School where he posted averages of 21.1 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 5.0 assists as a junior, but missed his senior season due to injury. He then enrolled at North Carolina A&T, becoming the school’s highest-rated recruit. After redshirting the 2021-22 season, he played 30 games for the Aggies in 2022-23, averaging 8.0 points and 5.7 rebounds in 22.5 minutes per game.
Powell is the fourth transfer to join Georgia Tech, alongside Javian McCollum, a 6-2 guard from Oklahoma, Ryan Mutombo, a 7-2 center from Georgetown, and Luke O’Brien, a 6-8 wing from Colorado. Additionally, Georgia Tech’s recruiting class, which is ranked 14th nationally, includes high school players such as Cole Kirouac, a 6-11 center from Cumming, Ga. (Brewster Academy), Jaeden Mustaf, a 6-4 guard from Bowie, Md. (Overtime Elite), Doryan Onwuchekwa, a 6-11 center from DeSoto, Texas (Faith Family Academy of Oak Cliff), and Darrion Sutton, a 6-8 forward from St. Louis, Mo. (Overtime Elite in Atlanta).
