JUST IN: General manager, Brad Treliving’s announced a huge commitment of a talented Defenceman to a two year contract Extension worth $850,000 per year

The Toronto Maple Leafs have announced that they have extended defenseman Philippe Myers with a two-year contract worth $850,000 per year, beginning in the 2025–26 season. This decision is part of general manager Brad Treliving’s strategy to revamp the team’s defense, following recent signings of defensemen Chris Tanev, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Dakota Mermis, and Jani Hakanpaa during the last offseason. Myers, 27, joined the Maple Leafs in July on a one-year, $775,000 contract, initially seen as a low-profile addition with slim chances of making the opening-night roster. However, he has made a significant impact during the first third of the season. Although he has only registered two points (both assists) in 11 games this season, Myers has become a vital player, averaging 17:07 of ice time per game, and demonstrating solid physicality and puck handling skills. Having gone undrafted and previously playing for Philadelphia, Nashville, and Tampa Bay, Myers’ path to contributing on a competitive Toronto team has been unconventional. “It’s been a frustrating past couple of years for me,” he shared in October, according to The Athletic. “But I never stopped believing.” This season, Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube has effectively paired Myers with Morgan Rielly on the second defensive line, creating a surprisingly strong partnership.

With this contract extension, Myers has ensured his spot in Toronto for the next two seasons, provided he fulfills his existing and future agreements with the Leafs. The highest number of games he has played in a season is 50, which he accomplished with the Philadelphia Flyers in 2020. This team is where he spent the most time, participating in a total of 115 games.
