JUST IN: Ex-Warrington Wolves forward star makes shock coaching move

In a surprising move, former Warrington Wolves forward Josh McGuire has joined the coaching staff at the Brisbane Broncos, taking on the role of wrestling coach.

A Familiar Face Returns Home

McGuire, who made 259 appearances in the NRL with 194 of those coming for the Broncos over a ten-year period, is returning to the club where his professional career began. He replaces Brett O’Farrell, who left the Broncos during the pre-season.

A Tumultuous Spell at Warrington

The 34-year-old, who is still eligible to play for the Broncos, had a brief and ill-fated spell at Warrington Wolves in the 2023 Super League season. Despite signing a two-year deal, McGuire was ousted after just six months following a string of disciplinary issues. In February 2023, McGuire was sent off in a pre-season game against the Leigh Leopards for using unacceptable language, leading to a seven-match ban. Then, in June, he was slapped with a 12-game suspension and a £1,000 fine for a similar offense during Warrington’s loss against Leigh.

Returning to His ‘Spiritual Home’

Now, McGuire is back at the Broncos, a club he considers his “spiritual home.” Speaking to the Courier Mail, he expressed his delight at the opportunity, saying, “It’s nice to be back at the club where it all started for me. I’m happy to be home and around such a lovely bunch of fellas.”McGuire acknowledged the Broncos’ family-oriented culture, stating, “The Broncos are a very family-oriented club, so I’m very thankful for the opportunity.” He also praised the team’s resurgence, noting, “It’s great to see the Broncos back to where they should be, they are a powerhouse of the comp, and I’m appreciative to be part of this set up.”As the Broncos continue their push for success, the addition of the experienced and versatile McGuire to their coaching staff could prove to be a valuable asset, both in terms of his technical expertise and his intimate knowledge of the club.
