The Los Angeles Chargers are preparing for the upcoming NFL Draft, where they are expected to prioritize adding a wide receiver to their roster. With the fifth overall pick, the Chargers have been linked to both wide receivers and offensive linemen. However, there has also been speculation that they may consider trading down to acquire more draft assets and address their numerous roster needs.
In a recent mock draft by USA Today’s Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz, the Chargers are projected to trade back from No. 5 to No. 11 and No. 23, acquiring these picks from the Minnesota Vikings.
With the 11th pick, the Chargers select an offensive tackle, while at No. 23, they take Texas wide receiver Adonai Mitchell. According to Middlehurst-Schwartz, this trade scenario allows the Chargers to address both their offensive line and wide receiver needs, potentially landing a go-to target for quarterback Justin Herbert in Mitchell.
Mitchell is recognized for his offensive prowess and has the potential to complement Herbert well. Although he may not be among the top prospects in this year’s draft class, Mitchell has demonstrated his ability to make an impact, catching 55 passes for 845 yards and 11 touchdowns last season for the Longhorns. His contributions were instrumental in Texas’s College Football Playoff appearance, and he is now poised to make an impact at the professional level.
If the Chargers can secure both an offensive lineman and a wide receiver in the first round, it would be considered a successful draft for them. Mitchell could form a formidable pairing with last year’s first-round selection, Quentin Johnston, who is also expected to have a breakout year.
The Chargers have various options to consider for their first-round picks, and trading back could be a viable strategy if they can secure quality players with their selections.
