The Montreal Canadiens have agreed to a three-year entry-level deal with defenseman Lane Hutson, as announced by the NHL team on Friday.
Hailing from Holland, Michigan, the 20-year-old player excelled with 15 goals and 34 assists in 38 games while playing for the Boston Terriers. His 49 points matched Denver’s Zeev Buium for the highest among NCAA defensemen.
Standing at five-foot-10 and weighing 162 pounds, Hutson was a top-10 candidate for the prestigious Hobey Baker Award, presented annually to the best player in NCAA men’s hockey. Additionally, he secured a spot on Hockey East’s first all-star team for the second consecutive year.
On the international stage, Hutson contributed to the United States’ gold medal victory at the 2024 world junior hockey championship and the bronze medal at the 2023 tournament.
The Canadiens picked Hutson in the second round (62nd overall) of the 2022 NHL draft.
On Saturday, Montreal will face off against the Ottawa Senators, then engage in back-to-back games against the Detroit Red Wings on Monday and Tuesday. The Canadiens have stated that Hutson will link up with the team on Sunday.
