JUST IN: Cameron Heyward gets “Brutally Honest” About His Holdout on Steelers deal

The Pittsburgh Steelers are filled with optimism for the upcoming season, but they face a cloud of uncertainty surrounding Cameron Heyward’s offseason holdout. The veteran defensive lineman is not participating in any workouts as he seeks a contract extension. Heyward is entering the final year of his current deal, and he has stated that his holdout is a standard part of contract negotiations. “Have always attended these, but at this time it’s just contract negotiations, and I want to be a Pittsburgh Steeler, but we’ll see what happens,” Heyward said, via Brooke Pryor of ESPN.

“I’m training hard. It’s nothing I’m not doing on and off the field. I’m doing everything possible, and we’ll get there when we get there. “Despite his absence from team activities, Heyward remains committed to the Steelers and is working hard to stay in shape. The organization and its fans hope that the two sides can reach an agreement on a contract extension, ensuring that Heyward remains a key part of the team’s defensive unit for years to come.

Cameron Heyward has spent his entire 13-year NFL career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, earning six consecutive Pro Bowl selections until the streak was snapped last season. However, his production took a hit in 2023, partly due to a groin injury that caused him to miss six games. After recording double-digit sacks in 2021 and 2022, Heyward managed only 2.0 sacks in the previous campaign. Despite Heyward’s absence, the Steelers’ defense remained strong, helping the team return to the playoffs after a one-year hiatus.

The addition of future Hall of Fame quarterback Russell Wilson, along with a capable backup in Justin Fields, has raised expectations for the Steelers’ offense. While they may not win the highly competitive AFC North division, the Steelers are poised to be a legitimate playoff contender. Defensively, the Steelers boast a formidable pass rusher in T.J. Watt, a Pro Bowl safety in Minkah Fitzpatrick, and a promising young cornerback in Joey Porter Jr. However, Heyward’s potential absence due to contract negotiations could create a void in their defensive line. The Steelers will hope to resolve the situation and secure Heyward’s services for the upcoming season and beyond.
