JUST IN: Bolton Wanderers ‘enquire’ about Byers – transfer rumour

Wanderers Reportedly Inquire About Free Agent George Byers

As the summer transfer window approaches, Sheffield Wednesday midfielder George Byers has become a hot commodity. The 27-year-old, who is set to become a free agent, has caught the eye of several clubs, including Wanderers, according to recent reports.

Byers spent the second half of the 2022/23 season on loan at Blackpool, where he made 16 appearances for the Seasiders. Despite narrowly missing out on a play-off spot, Byers’ performances were impressive, helping Neil Critchley’s side finish in eighth place, just three points behind Barnsley.

 Promotion and Championship Appearances

Prior to his loan spell at Blackpool, Byers played a crucial role in Sheffield Wednesday’s promotion to the Championship during the 2022/23 campaign. The midfielder scored six goals in 29 matches, including a memorable strike in a 2-0 victory over Toughsheet Community Stadium.

Byers continued his impressive form in the first half of the current season, making 20 appearances in the second tier. He found the back of the net in a 2-1 defeat against Birmingham.

Interest from Multiple Clubs

According to the Sheffield Star, Bolton and Oxford have both “made enquiries” about Byers ahead of the upcoming play-off final. Meanwhile, Birmingham, Huddersfield, and Rotherham are keeping a close eye on the situation, following their relegations to League One.

The report also suggests that Barnsley and Blackpool are among Byers’ admirers, with the latter keen to secure his services permanently after his successful loan spell.

Varied Career Path

Byers’ journey in professional football has been varied. He came through the academy ranks at Watford, making his senior debut in 2015, and also represented Scotland at various youth levels. In 2016, he left Vicarage Road to join Swansea, where he spent the next five years and made around 50 appearances.

During the second half of the 2020/21 season, Byers had a loan spell at Portsmouth, playing 16 times in all competitions. The following summer, he made the move to Sheffield Wednesday, where he has made over 60 appearances for the Yorkshire club in the past three seasons.

As the transfer speculation continues to swirl around George Byers, it remains to be seen where the talented midfielder will end up next season. One thing is certain: his impressive performances have not gone unnoticed, and he is sure to be a valuable addition to any team that secures his services.
