The Steelers have been actively seeking a wide receiver ever since they traded Diontae Johnson to the Panthers. They were reportedly close to securing one of the top free agents for the position, but there have been recent developments.
As per a report by Mark Kaboly from The Athletic, Pittsburgh is currently at a standstill in negotiations with former Cincinnati Bengals receiver Tyler Boyd.
Kaboly mentioned on “The Fan Morning Show” on 93.7 The Fan, “They are holding out on Tyler Boyd. It’s uncertain how this situation will unfold, as Boyd is seeking a higher salary than what is being offered to him.”
Boyd is seen as a preferred choice among fans to help replace Johnson. He has ties to the area, having grown up in Clairton, Pa., and played college football at the University of Pittsburgh.
Recently, Kaboly disclosed that there is a “mutual interest” between Pittsburgh and Boyd. However, he also noted on Monday that while some individuals within the Steelers organization support signing Boyd, not everyone is fully onboard with the decision.
The unexpected developments have surprised many individuals, but if he is holding out for a higher value for himself over a week into free agency, that could pose an issue.
Nevertheless, even at 29 years old, he has consistently proven to be one of the most dependable wide receivers in the league, achieving a minimum of 50 receptions and 650 receiving yards in each of the past six seasons.
Therefore, the Steelers are faced with the decision of how long they are willing to hold out for Boyd before exploring other options. It is crucial for them to bolster their thin wide receiver group, especially following George Pickens’ addition, sooner rather than later.
Pittsburgh has also been reportedly exploring trade options for a wide receiver. The team has been associated with 49ers’ Brandon Aiyuk and Commanders’ Terry McLaurin in rumors, although acquiring either player is expected to come with a high price tag.
While bringing in Boyd doesn’t necessarily mean the Steelers will refrain from selecting another dynamic player during the 2024 NFL Draft, which boasts a deep pool of wide receiver talent, it does offer them the flexibility to address other key positions like center and right tackle with their higher draft picks.
The outcome of the Boyd situation remains uncertain, and if Pittsburgh is unable to secure his services, they could find themselves in a challenging position with multiple positions to fill after the initial wave of free agency concludes.
