Judge Verdict: 3 Charged in Shooting Death of Southern Mississippi Defensive Back

Three individuals were arrested on Friday and accused of committing capital murder in connection with the death of Marcus “MJ” Daniels Jr., a defensive back from Southern Mississippi, as per the police report. The incident occurred on Tuesday at an apartment complex in Hattiesburg.

The arrested individuals are Orlando May, 18, from Hattiesburg; Allen Marcus Gardner, 17, from Houston; and Samir Green, 16, from Hattiesburg. Hattiesburg Police Chief Hardy Sims mentioned that the two underage individuals are being charged as adults.

In addition to the capital murder charges, May is facing allegations of attempted carjacking, felony eluding, and grand larceny auto. Gardner and Green also face charges of attempted armed carjacking each.

Efforts by the Associated Press to ascertain whether the accused have legal representation for commenting purposes led to inconclusive responses from the Forrest County Sheriff’s Department, Hattiesburg Municipal Court, and the public defender’s office.

Daniels, who served as a starting cornerback for Southern Miss in the previous season, was noted for his performance in interceptions and tackles. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound senior transitioned to safety for the upcoming 2024 season, with expectations to reclaim his starting position, as reported by the Hattiesburg American.
