Josh Petty, 5-Superstar OT, commits to Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

It’s been quite a while since a five-star recruit chose to join Georgia Tech, but that changed on Monday.

Josh Petty, a five-star offensive tackle from Roswell, Georgia, announced his commitment to the Yellow Jackets, opting for them over offers from Florida State, Ohio State, Stanford, and Tennessee. Standing at 6-foot-4.5 and weighing 262 pounds, Petty is ranked as the No. 14 player nationally, the No. 2 offensive tackle, and the No. 4 player in Georgia according to 247Sports.

Petty’s commitment is a significant win for head coach Brent Key and his staff, especially since he has been a standout player on both sides of the ball. Last season, he recorded 58 tackles, nine tackles for loss, five sacks, an interception, and a fumble recovery.

Georgia Tech was proactive in Petty’s recruitment, offering him a scholarship back in January 2021. Since then, he has visited the campus multiple times, with his first visit occurring in March 2023. This summer, he traveled frequently to check out his top schools, with Florida State and Georgia Tech being the only two he visited in July.

Petty’s commitment marks a historic moment for Georgia Tech, as he becomes the program’s first five-star recruit in the modern recruiting era and the second-highest rated recruit in its history, following Calvin Johnson. His decision to stay closer to home is a testament to Georgia Tech’s efforts in building strong relationships with recruits.

Overall, Petty’s addition is a major boost for the Yellow Jackets and their 2025 recruiting class, which is on track to be one of the best the program has seen in years.
