Tom Brady was calling the Buffalo Bills–LA Rams game on Sunday Night Football on December 8. Per the 7x Super Bowl winner, the Bills’ 44-42 loss to the Rams could have ended differently if they hadn’t chosen a quarterback sneak in the end. The Bills used a timeout after an unsuccessful attempt to score and in hindsight, that might not have strategically been the best idea.
Josh Allen made history in the NFL tonight, but the cost was too heavy. It started when the Bills WR Amari Cooper drew an offensive penalty on a pass interference and landed the Bills to Rams goal line. It was all about playing smart from that point. The Bills OC, Joe Brady, called for a QB sneak that failed. The clock was running out, the Bills were down by 44-35 and they had three timeouts left.
The Bills decided to burn the timeout and run the ball instead. That’s what Tom Brady had a problem with. “To me, take three shots thrown and don’t use a timeout,” Brady said withe one minute left on the clock. “Even if they score, what’s the big deal? They’re gonna have to go for an onside kick. I don’t like that one bit. It could have just cost them the game right there.”
The Bills’ worst fears materialized when Allen was stopped short on a crucial run, effectively ending the game. Afterward, the media questioned him about that final play. “Josh, on the last time you got off the goal line, was that a designed run since you ended up using a timeout, potentially costing you a chance to stop the clock at the end?”
“Yeah, I need to find a way to get in,” responded the Bills quarterback, adding that he executed the play as best he could. His main regret, despite throwing for 342 yards and six touchdowns, was not scoring enough in the first half. The Buffalo team managed to score four touchdowns in the second half but only two in the first.
Allen attacked the Rams with touchdowns, beginning with a 51-yard pass to Khalil Shakir in the third quarter. The final quarter turned into a touchdown parade, with Allen running for two more scores and completing another touchdown pass, this time a 21-yarder to Mack Hollins.
With a total of six touchdowns in the game, Allen made history by becoming the first quarterback in Buffalo Bills history and the NFL to achieve three rushing touchdowns and three passing touchdowns in a single game. He previously dominated in a snow game against the 49ers, so expectations were high, making the loss to the Rams even more surprising. This performance bolstered Allen’s candidacy in the MVP conversation.
Despite his remarkable statistics, Allen was frustrated with the outcome, and rightly so.
Josh Allen Doesn’t Care About Making History
The Bills secured the AFC East title by defeating the 49ers, but the game against the Rams served as a wake-up call. Allen recognized there was much to improve. He believed the team’s performance fell short of expectations, despite accumulating 342 passing yards and another 103 rushing yards. Ultimately, it was clear that Allen despises losing.
