First Five-Star Recruit in Institute History
A native of Roswell, Georgia, stays close to home to join an increasingly impressive recruiting class.
Today, in a surprising turn of events, Brent Key, Geep Wade, and the Georgia Tech Football program secured their highest-rated recruit ever. Josh Petty (6’5”, 265 lbs, OL) from Fellowship Christian School in Roswell committed to the Yellow Jackets, choosing them over Florida State, Stanford, Tennessee, and Ohio State during a ceremony attended by family, friends, and media. He is the first five-star recruit in Tech’s history, ranked 14th nationally and second among offensive linemen for the 2025 class according to 247Sports.
In an interview with Kelly Quinlan following his decision, Petty emphasized that his official visit made a significant impact. “They’ve been consistent throughout my recruitment and the entire process. Coach Key has been fantastic during all of this.”
“Bringing back the old GT, the team I admired while growing up, with competitive players like Calvin Johnson, is impressive. [Key] wants to do that with in-state talent, including guys like me and those I’ve competed against for years. I believe in that vision,” said Petty.
With Petty on board, Tech now has six offensive line recruits for 2025, and their overall recruiting class is currently ranked 23rd, a drop from earlier standings as expected due to their initial influx of commitments.
Turning the Tide in Georgia Tech Football Recruitment
It’s clear that Georgia Tech Football is sending a strong, authentic message in their recruitment efforts. After years of questioning why they struggled to attract local talent compared to other Southern schools, that narrative may finally be changing. The program is securing commitments from players who, in previous cycles, would have been their standout recruits. Now, multiple such prospects are onboard, and we’re experiencing a rise to the five-star level.
What stands out to me is that Brent Key, Geep Wade, and the entire staff truly understand the essence of Georgia Tech. Unlike Geoff Collins, who failed to convey a genuine vision of the program, Key knows Tech intimately—he’s experienced its highs and lows and recognizes its potential as a special place.
“The coaching staff is excellent, especially with the offensive line group. They really develop freshmen, helping them earn starting positions. If you’re ready, you’ll play. That message resonates with me. Plus, they run a successful outside zone offense, which is something I’m good at and will be beneficial in college,” Petty mentioned in an interview regarding the coaching staff.
As fans, we began to feel optimistic by the end of last season, believing the team was on the brink of becoming relevant again. Now, it seems recruits share that vision, seeing the potential for the future. Although this season’s schedule may be challenging, if we demonstrate the style of football we embraced last year, we will continue to attract talented players like Petty.
And for those curious about why Calvin Johnson isn’t recognized as Tech’s first five-star recruit, it’s because he was reclassified from a 4-star after joining us. It’s a technicality, but at least we now have a confirmed five-star in Petty to celebrate!
