Jerod Mayo Sends Clear Message to Bill Belichick on UNC Coaching Stint After Patriots Legend Makes a Bold Promise

In a surprising move that has left football fans puzzled, Bill Belichick—the genius behind the Patriots’ dynasty—has thrown everyone a curveball. Just when we thought we had him figured out, the coaching legend has decided to explore a completely different playing field: college football.

The sports world collectively did a double-take when news broke about the former Patriots’ head coach interviewing for the head coaching position at the University of North Carolina. I mean, come on, this is the guy who’s been all about the NFL for what feels like forever! But here’s where it gets even more interesting: while Belichick is eyeing the college ranks, his former team has already moved on.

The Patriots’ new head coach, Jerod Mayo, has shared his thoughts on Belichick’s potential career shift. This Friday, Mark Daniels posted on his X account about Jerod Mayo expressing his support for Bill Belichick. Mayo stated, “I’m sure he’s going to do a good job out there. I wish him nothing but the best.” Despite ongoing debates about Belichick potentially being considered a failed coach in college football, Mayo still believes in his skills. After all, what Bill has done for the Patriots is something every NFL fan will always remember.

Belichick began his head coaching journey with the Cleveland Browns in 1991. After stints with other NFL teams, he joined the Patriots, launching into his legendary era. He served as the head coach of the Patriots until the end of the 2023 season, when the team announced that they and Belichick had mutually decided to part ways.

Over his 29 seasons as a head coach in the NFL—24 of those with the New England Patriots—Belichick achieved an impressive 333-178 record, including playoffs. He made it to the Super Bowl eight times (all with New England), snagged six championships, and had 19 playoff appearances.

Belichick surprised everyone by expressing interest in the head coaching position at the University of North Carolina. Following the announcement, during an appearance on WEEI’s ‘The Greg Hill Show,’ Jerod Mayo was asked if he was surprised by Belichick’s move, given his proximity to the NFL wins record. “He’s a great coach,” Mayo responded. “It doesn’t matter if you’re a rookie or a seasoned vet in the league. Bill’s an amazing teacher, and I wish him nothing but the best. I believe he’ll find success no matter where he goes.”

Mayo also mentioned that he didn’t think Belichick would struggle with recruiting given his impressive resume. He even asked WEEI co-host and former Patriots tight end, Jermaine Wiggins, how it would feel to be recruited by such a coaching legend, showcasing his trust in Belichick as a coach. Just like Jerod Mayo, Bill is all in on his college football coaching journey—believing it’s not just a job, but a game-changing era!

A bold promise from Bill Belichick

Bill Belichick has officially transitioned from the NFL to college football, taking the helm as the head coach for the University of North Carolina. With six Super Bowl championships to his name, he seems to have accomplished it all. However, now he has found another goal: to prove he can succeed in college football.

I’ve always wanted to coach in college football. It just never really worked out,” Belichick said during his introductory press conference on Thursday. “I had great years in the NFL, which was fine, but this is truly a dream come true for me.” He also noted that he’s not planning to leave the team, which is a bold promise coming from him, amid analysts advising him to be patient.
