The Ottawa Senators have faced significant injury issues over the past couple of seasons. Key players like Joshua Norris, Shane Pinto, and various goaltenders have been affected, highlighting that it’s not just the number of injuries but the impact on crucial players.
This year, goalie Anton Forsberg is injured and will not join the team on their upcoming road trip. The team has opted to keep details about his injury and recovery timeline private. As a result, the Senators are making some roster adjustments, with Leevi Merilainen set to join the team as they begin their challenging nine-game road trip starting Tuesday in Seattle, Washington, against the Kraken.

The situation with Anton Forsberg’s injury remains unclear, but it occurred during the pregame warmup, forcing the Senators to rely on an emergency backup goaltender (EBUG) to support Linus Ullmark. Ullmark had been scheduled for a rest after a stellar performance the night before, where he shut out the Carolina Hurricanes 3-0, stopping all 32 shots. Despite this unexpected turn of events, he played a crucial role in the Senators’ 3-2 overtime victory against the Penguins, helping them secure the second Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference playoff race.
Interestingly, the timing of Forsberg’s injury might not be as detrimental as it seems. With Forsberg struggling recently, going 0-2 with a combined save percentage of .816, the Senators find themselves in a good position thanks to Ullmark’s exceptional form. Over his last seven games, Ullmark is an impressive 6-0-1 with one shutout and a .950 SV%.
Meanwhile, Mads Sogaard, who recently returned from his own injury, is not fully fit, leading to the decision to recall Leevi Merilainen from the Belleville Senators. Merilainen had been sidelined for two months but had a solid record of 7-2-2 in 13 games this season. Although he struggled in his recent game, getting pulled after allowing five goals on 21 shots, he has earned this opportunity.
As more details about Forsberg’s injury emerge, the Senators’ management will be better positioned to determine who will back up Ullmark.
