The situation between the New York Jets and edge rusher Haason Reddick took a turn for the worse earlier this week when Reddick officially requested a trade from the team. He is dissatisfied with his contract and believes he has outperformed his current salary, seeking a raise that the Jets have so far been unwilling to provide.
While such disputes are not uncommon in the NFL, the background of this particular case is noteworthy. Reddick’s contract dissatisfaction dates back to his time with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he also sought a pay increase but was denied. The Eagles put him on the trade market, and the Jets acquired him without securing a new deal.
Although the situation may seem predictable, it has escalated, with Reddick wanting to leave New York. An NFL analyst has suggested that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers should consider pursuing Reddick.
Bleacher Report’s NFL analyst Alex Kay identified potential landing spots for key players who might change teams before the season begins. He believes the Buccaneers should be interested in Reddick due to their current pass-rushing situation. Tampa has the salary cap space to meet Reddick’s contract demands and is entering the season with Joe Tryon-Shoyinka and YaYa Diaby as their main pass rushers.
Both Tryon-Shoyinka and Diaby are young and talented but are currently dealing with injuries and have yet to achieve double-digit sack seasons in their careers. In contrast, Reddick is healthy and has recorded over 10 sacks in each of the last four seasons. While the Jets have made it clear they are not looking to trade Reddick at this time, that stance could change, making the Buccaneers a potential fit for him.
