William Schmidt, a right-handed pitcher and LSU baseball signee, is living at home.
Just hours before the MLB selection began on Sunday, Schmidt declared on social media that he will reject MLB’s advances and attend LSU, despite being a projected first-round pick in the 2024 draft.
Schmidt pitched for Catholic High in Baton Rouge last season, recording 102 strikeouts in 63⅔ innings with a 0.44 ERA. He led the Bears to a state championship and was named Louisiana’s Gatorade Player of the Year.
Schmidt was ranked as a top-30 prospect in the draft by both MLB.com and ESPN. Schmidt is ranked as the best high school right-handed pitcher prospect by MLB.com.
Out of high school, Schmidt is one of four right-handed pitchers that committed to LSU. The Tigers have also added Mavrick Rizy, Landon Victorian, and Casan Evans to their roster.
Schmidt, Rizy, and Evans received invitations to the June MLB draft combine.
Gavin Guidry, Fidel Ulloa, and Kade Woods are among the seven right-handed pitchers that the Tigers acquired through the transfer site. The three are eligible for the draft, but in 2025 they might move back to Baton Rouge.
