A national media outlet has released its initial preseason rankings for quarterbacks, listing Clemson Tigers quarterback Cade Klubnik as the top signal caller in the nation as spring approaches.

Max Chadwick from Pro Football Focus noted that Klubnik, “a rising senior,” is recognized as “the top returning quarterback in college football after a significant improvement in his junior year.”

Klubnik concluded the 2024 season with a passing grade of 87.7 from PFF, a notable rise from his 2023 grade of 63.9.

Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik (2) throws a pass during the game against the Texas Longhorns in the first round of the College Football Playoffs at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2024.

“After ranking 102nd among FBS quarterbacks in 2023 with a score of 63.9, he elevated to fifth place in 2024 with an 87.7. Only Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders recorded more touchdowns than Klubnik’s 36, with both being projected as top-five picks in the 2025 NFL Draft. Additionally, he was fifth in big-time throws with 28,” Chadwick explained.

During his impressive junior season, Klubnik threw for 3,639 yards, tossed 36 touchdowns, and had six interceptions, achieving a completion rate of 63.4%. He also rushed for a career-high 463 yards and seven touchdowns.

The Tigers are coming off a 10-4 season, which saw them return to the ACC championship game, where they secured a victory against SMU with a last-second field goal, paving their way back to the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff for the first time.

Among the other names in the list familiar to Tigers fans is LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier, ranked fifth among returning quarterbacks. This is particularly relevant as Clemson will face LSU in their season opener on August 30 at Memorial Stadium.

Nussmeier, the son of former college star and current NFL coach Doug Nussmeier, worked hard at LSU for three years to earn the role of full-time starter after Heisman winner Jayden Daniels transitioned to the NFL. Last season, he finished fifth nationally in passing yards with 4,043.

Clemson will also go up against SMU at Memorial Stadium this season, featuring Kevin Jennings, who is ranked tenth on Chadwick’s list. This matchup will be a rematch of the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship Game.

In that title game, Jennings performed admirably, throwing for 304 yards and three touchdowns, along with gaining 35 rushing yards and scoring another touchdown on the ground.
