It Is Devastating, Auburn Tigers Lost Another Top Prospect, flipped his commitment To A Rival Team
For the second time in as many days, the Auburn Tigers have lost a commit from their 2026 recruiting class to another school.
On Monday, four-star wide receiver Devin Carter from Douglas County High School in Douglasville, Georgia, flipped his commitment from Auburn to Florida State, according to On3’s Hayes Fawcett. His decision follows that of fellow four-star prospect Shadarius Toodle, a linebacker who flipped to Georgia a day earlier.
Carter becomes the third Auburn commit to leave the 2026 class this summer, joining Toodle and four-star linebacker JaMichael Garrett, who decommitted earlier in July.

Carter’s decision to flip wasn’t unexpected, as On3’s Steve Wiltfong had predicted the move on Sunday. Ranked as the No. 19 wide receiver in the 2026 class, Carter has strong ties to Florida State—his father, Dexter Carter, played running back for the Seminoles.
Carter originally committed to Auburn in January, but his change of heart was largely influenced by the coaching staff at FSU—specifically a familiar face from Auburn.

Former Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn
“The main reason is the new offensive staff. Coach (Tim) Harris and Coach (Gus) Malzahn are excellent and very detail-oriented,” Carter told On3’s Chad Simmons. “They’re revamping the offense and have a plan to make me a key contributor early. My goal is to be a freshman All-American, and I believe they can help me get there.”
It’s been a challenging summer for Auburn’s 2026 recruiting class. The Tigers have now lost three commitments—Carter, linebacker Shadarius Toodle, and JaMichael Garrett—while only gaining one addition, three-star running back Eric Perry.
Following Carter’s departure, Auburn’s 2026 class now ranks No. 62 nationally, per 247Sports, a drop of two spots. The Tigers are also down to just one wide receiver in the class: three-star prospect Denarius Gray.
