Iowa Hawkeyes, Kirk Ferentz, Suffer Bad News in NCAA Transfer Portal on Friday Morning
The Iowa Hawkeyes and head coach Kirk Ferentz are looking to build back to being a top contender in the Big Ten. After a 2024 season that saw them go 8-5 overall and 6-3 in the conference, there is clearly a lot of work to be done. One of the biggest question marks exiting last season had to do with the quarterback position.
Iowa went out and brought in two transfer portal signal callers in Hank Brown and Mark Gronowski. Both players are very talented and should help the Hawkeyes turn their passing game around.
That being said, Iowa has question marks remaining about the weapons their quarterback will have to work with. On Thursday, the Hawkeyes also received some bad transfer portal news. Gavin Hoffman, a redshirt freshman tight end, has announced that he is entering the transfer portal.
In a post on X, Hoffman made a statement about his decision to explore playing elsewhere.
“First and foremost, I want to thank my Lord and Savior for blessing me with the opportunity to play tight end at the University of Iowa,” he wrote. “I would like to thank coach Ferentz, coach Hodge, and coach Bell for recruiting me, and believing in my abilities to play at the next level. I appreciate all the time and effort you poured into my development.
I am truly grateful for all that you did for my family and me.” He continued on to announce his decision to enter the portal. “That being said, I will be entering the transfer portal with 4 remaining years of eligibility,” he wrote.

Originally, Hoffman was a four-star prospect, according to 247 Sports. He was the No. 12 ranked tight end in the 2024 recruiting class and the No. 202 overall prospect.
