Despite Purdue’s 2024 struggles on the football field, coach Ryan Walters is “expected to get more time,” as reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
Although facing challenges in 2024, Walters is likely to remain as head coach for a third season. Thamel highlighted that the second-year coach, with a current record of 5-14, is anticipated to receive additional support to help turn around the Boilermakers.
In Year 2, Walters has faced significant difficulties, concluding his first season with a 4-8 record and seeing his team competitive in multiple games. This season, however, the Boilermakers sit at a 1-6 start, suffering blowout losses in five matches, with their only victory being a 49-0 win over Indiana State.
Thamel noted that Purdue’s administration recognizes the program’s lag in NIL and plans to bolster support for Walters during this challenging time. He emphasized, “Ryan Walters is only in his second season there, and he’s expected to get more time.”
Notably, Walters’ buyout after the 2024 season stands at $ 9.3 million. The team has underperformed on both offense and defense, ranking 130th in scoring defense (38.4 ppg) and 116th in scoring offense (20.8 ppg).
Despite the hurdles, Thamel asserts that Walters will be given another year to help guide the team in the right direction, with five games remaining in the 2024 schedule against teams like Northwestern, No. 4 Ohio State, No. 3 Penn State, Michigan State, and No. 13 Indiana.
