Injury Setback for Saints Opens Door for Ex-Rams and Chiefs Champions

We’ve reached a point in training camp where it’s reasonable to begin evaluating key roster battles for the New Orleans Saints. That said, it’s important to remember that much can and likely will change in the coming weeks.
As a case in point, the team has released its first unofficial depth chart of camp, which was posted on social media by Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football.

In the coming weeks, much of the focus will understandably be on the quarterback competition—but for now, let’s shift attention to another key storyline: the running back situation for the Saints.
Alvin Kamara remains the clear-cut starter, and Kendre Miller, who has stayed healthy through camp and performed well, is expectedly slotted in as the No. 2 back on the depth chart. Beyond those two, however, things get more intriguing.
Veterans Cam Akers and Clyde Edwards-Helaire are battling for roster spots, while rookie Devin Neal has also drawn interest as a potential contributor. Unfortunately, Neal will now be sidelined for several weeks due to a hamstring injury, according to ESPN’s Katherine Terrell.
“Rookie running back Devin Neal will be out for several weeks with a hamstring injury, safety J.T. Gray returned to practice, and tight end Juwan Johnson, who did not practice, is still considered day-to-day,” Terrell reported.
Neal’s absence opens the door wider for Akers and Edwards-Helaire to make a stronger case for the 53-man roster—possibly even both. With preseason games approaching, the competition in the Saints’ backfield just got even more compelling.
