As his Los Angeles Lakers fell to the Houston Rockets 99-80 in Summer League play, Bronny James continued to make mistakes.
The LeBron James kid has been having trouble shooting the ball, and Friday night’s 19-point defeat to Houston was no different.
James finished with eight points, five rebounds, two steals, and three turnovers while shooting a horrendous 3-for-14 from the field and an even awful 0-of-8 from three-point range.
After the game, James remarked, “I just feel like I’m in a little slump right now.”
He said, “I’m just looking forward to any basketball I play, no matter what level I’m playing at,” in response to a question regarding his stint in the G-League.
James tried his hardest to slow down third-round pick Reed Sheppard, but he was unable to do so.
James remarked, “I’ve known Reed since fifth grade.” I was merely attempting to get inside his body to stop those 3-balls from going up because I knew he was a shooter. I tried to play him all out to show the coaches and general manager how hard I was working.
Sheppard made four of his six 3-point attempts. In the end, he finished with nine of seventeen points, four rebounds, five assists, and four turnovers.
The Lakers’ coaches still believe that the 55th overall pick in this year’s draft has potential, even in spite of his low-scoring outings in the past.
“Shoot, he’s going to have a long career,” stated Lakers Summer League coach Dane Johnson. “This is only the start.” We simply never stop imparting [confidence] and making sure they remember it. Thus, there is still a long way to go.
Johnson, the coach of the South Bay Lakers in the G-League, declined to comment on specific organizational plans for rookie James when he was questioned about the possibility of his playing in the league.
Johnson remarked, “I can’t really comment on that because I don’t know about it yet.” “However, I believe that all of these guys—the draftees—will eventually play in the G League.”
Several Lakers executives and coaches attended the game, including general manager Rob Pelinka and recently hired coach JJ Redick.
During the game, Redick stated on ESPN that they want Bronny to “press the ball.”
“If you get blown by, if you have 10 fouls, that’s on me,” I told him yesterday. Redick stated, “I want you to apply pressure to the ball.”
The Lakers will play the Boston Celtics in their second Summer League match on Monday.
