Alex Anthopoulos can kill two birds with one stone for Braves at trade deadline

The Braves are on the brink of significant changes in around two weeks for a couple of reasons. Michael Harris II is poised for a return post-All-Star break, which will be a substantial boost. The upcoming trade deadline provides an opportunity for the Braves to enhance their roster, much like they did in 2021.

General Manager Alex Anthopoulos is known for his active involvement in trades, and it is anticipated that Atlanta will be one of the most proactive teams during this period due to their offensive deficiencies.

The outfield requires the most reinforcements in terms of players, while the shortstop position may be the weakest link among position players.

Additionally, the pitching staff could benefit from reinforcements. Anthopoulos could potentially fortify the bullpen with cost-effective relief pitchers available at the deadline, and adding an extra starting pitcher would provide the team with crucial depth for the latter part of the season.

Anthopoulos has a history of addressing future needs proactively, possibly addressing potential roster gaps in 2025 during the 2024 deadline. For example, acquiring players like Raisel Iglesias before the need arises, as seen with Kenley Jansen’s departure.

Looking ahead, the Braves will need to address roster needs for both 2024 and 2025, particularly in the outfield due to Ronald Acuna Jr.’s injury.

Acuna may shift to a designated hitter role for his knee’s protection. To bolster the team for future seasons, Anthopoulos may pursue outfielders with multiple years of control at the upcoming trade deadline.

The starting rotation is another area of concern for the future, with the impending free agency of Max Fried and retirement of Charlie Morton. Securing reliable starters will be a priority in the off-season. The bullpen remains a strength, but addressing potential departures like AJ Minter’s free agency will be essential. Moreover, a new shortstop is needed for the 2025 season, whether addressed now or later.

While the focus is on the 2024 season, Anthopoulos aims to address long-term needs efficiently at the upcoming deadline to set the Braves up for success.
