‘I was having a glass of wine…’ Gregg Popovich reveals how Klay Thompson ‘wrecked his whole night’

It was an exciting evening for the Dallas Mavericks, who started their season with a 120-109 victory over the visiting San Antonio Spurs. The highlight of the night was Klay Thompson, who had a standout debut in a Mavericks uniform.

On the other hand, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich was not pleased about facing Thompson. In a press conference, Popovich expressed his frustration over the Mavericks signing the renowned shooter during free agency.

‘Oh my God, how the hell did they do that?’ That’s the honest to God truth. I was probably having a glass of wine somewhere and it wrecked my whole night. But you know about Klay. He’s special. It’s a great addition, of course.

Klay Thompson made a strong debut for the Dallas Mavericks, scoring 22 points on 7-of-13 shooting, including six three-pointers. After the game, he delighted Mavs fans by expressing his excitement about wearing Mavs Blue.

The San Antonio Spurs, led by reigning Rookie of the Year and star Victor Wembanyama, sought to bounce back from last season’s struggles, but they left the American Airlines Arena with a loss. As they move forward, they will face tougher competition, including multiple matchups against Thompson and the Mavericks.

In this historic debut, Thompson broke the franchise record for the most three-pointers in a debut, making six of ten attempts. A highlight moment that went viral occurred when Luka Doncic passed to a wide-open Thompson and began celebrating with the commentators before Thompson had even taken his shot, showcasing the immediate chemistry between the two stars.

Moreover, Thompson’s outstanding performance was driven by his synergy with teammate Doncic, who assisted on five of Thompson’s six three-pointers. The Mavs will encounter a tougher challenge against the Phoenix Suns in their next game, while the Spurs aim to bounce back as they host the Houston Rockets on their home court.
