Penny Hardaway, in a recent podcast, revealed his decision to forego opportunities with TNT and ESPN to assist a friend. The 4× NBA All-Star and 2× All-NBA First Team player, renowned for his career with the Orlando Magic and later playing with the Phoenix Suns, New York Knicks, and Miami Heat, made a significant shift when asked by his friend to help manage the Lester Middle School’s basketball team.
This event marked a turning point in Hardaway’s life after his NBA career. Hardaway also reflected on how injuries led to his NBA exit earlier than expected, leading him to believe it was part of a higher plan. He stated, “I think God always has a plan and a purpose for you,” in an interview with the Let’s Be Clear podcast.
Following his retirement, he immediately delved into coaching alongside Merriweather, who was battling colon cancer.
Originally, Penny Hardaway had set his sights on joining ESPN or TNT, but his plans took a turn due to Desmond Merriweather’s dedication to the middle school team.
Their common roots in the neighborhood and Merriweather’s strong passion convinced Hardaway to make a positive impact on young lives, leading him to pursue coaching. Reflecting on this decision, Hardaway emphasized, “I feel like it was my duty to do so and Des, he was the heart and soul,” as he remembered Merriweather’s infectious energy and dedication to mentoring young athletes.
In 2011, Penny Hardaway began his coaching journey at Lester Middle School, motivated by his friendship with Desmond Merriweather. Together, they achieved 6 championships—3 in middle school and 3 in high school. Unfortunately, Merriweather passed away in 2015 before witnessing the further successes, but his legacy endures through their shared mission.
Penny Hardaway’s ambition to lead an NBA franchise
Penny Hardaway’s guidance propelled the Lester Lions to victory in the West Tennessee State championship, clinching an outstanding 28-3 season. This triumph set the stage for Hardaway’s subsequent move: assuming the head coaching position at the Memphis Tigers in March 2018, succeeding Tubby Smith. Despite the accomplishments he has attained as a coach, he continues to strive for more and aims to coach in the professional league in the future.
In the Point Forward Podcast, Hardaway shared his enduring aspiration, expressing his desire to coach in the NBA. “Coaching at the NBA level is a dream of mine,” he revealed, underscoring his profound love for the sport. As of 2021, Hardaway was a strong candidate for the Orlando Magic coaching position. However, the role ultimately went to Steve Clifford.
Additionally, Hardaway delved into his ambitions, indicating, “I think about it every day,” as he contemplated the timeline for reaching this career goal. “But I definitely want to do it,” he confirmed.
Several college basketball coaches, such as Mike Montgomery, Brad Stevens, and Tim Floyd, have successfully made the transition to the NBA. Given Hardaway’s coaching track record and dedication, NBA enthusiasts will eagerly anticipate the team he will lead in the future.
