“Huge Blow” Talented 26-years-old Kansas football edge transferring to HBCU champion

Former Kansas football player makes a promise to Florida A&M, the HBCU national champion. Davion Westmoreland, who played football for Kansas, has declared his intention to attend FAMU. Westmoreland is a native of Griffin (GA) High School, where throughout his four years in the program, he made it to the state playoffs. After that, he transferred to Hutchinson Junior College, where he developed into a three-star prospect and finished 34th in his class overall. He was ranked 11th in Georgia and fifth among JUCO edge players.

Westmoreland participated in 19 games during his two seasons at Hutchinson. Throughout his career, he totaled 89 tackles, including 17 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, three fumble recoveries, one forced fumble, and one interception. As a sophomore in 2021, he was selected to the second team of the league. In 11 games, he racked up 54 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, and 6.5 sacks.

In the end, he decided to commit to Kansas in May 2022 despite receiving offers from Appalachian State, Middle Tennessee State, North Alabama, and Southeast Missouri State. After that, Westmoreland would wear a Kansas football uniform for 12 games, recording a total of six tackles. After spring camp, he accessed the transfer portal.

Now, he plays for a revamped Florida A&M team that lost a number of important defenders from the squad that won the HBCU and SWAC titles the previous season. Anthony Dunn, a former edge rusher who is now at Marshall, left one of the major gaps. Although those are large shoes to fill, Westmoreland will get the opportunity.
