Purdue managed to address its scholarship shortage just in time, although the resolution did not align with the preferences of most Boilermaker fans.
Shortly before Purdue’s summer training program was scheduled to commence, Kanon Catchings, the program’s top-rated incoming recruit, requested and was granted a release from his scholarship. This decision was made public by the program on Thursday.
With Catchings’ departure, Purdue now has the maximum allowable 13 scholarship players as per NCAA regulations.
Catchings, ranked as the 35th best player in the 247sports composite rankings, stood out as the most highly regarded player in Purdue’s six-player recruitment class. Notably, he is the nephew of former WNBA star Tamika Catchings.
A 6-foot-9 small forward, Catchings showcased his talent by averaging 15.3 points and 6.2 rebounds per game while competing for Overtime Elite last season. He is currently free to explore opportunities with other programs ahead of the upcoming 2024-25 season.
Despite this development, Purdue is anticipated to commence the next season as a top-15 team following their run to the national championship game in 2024.
