“Huge Blow” as Senators’ 2019 Brilliant first-round pick signs in SHL for cash considerations

Lassi Thomson, the Ottawa Senators’ 2019 first-round draft pick, has agreed to terms on a contract to play for the Malmö Redhawks of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL). This move comes after Thomson spent the 2023-24 regular season with the Belleville Senators, the Sens’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, where he tallied six goals and 15 assists for 21 points in 67 games. He also added two points in 4 Calder Cup Playoff contests.

The Tampere, Finland native has spent four seasons in the AHL with the Senators, registering 24 goals and 69 assists for 93 points in 202 games. Thomson made his NHL debut in the 2021-22 season, appearing in 16 games and recording five points.

Prior to his professional career, Thomson spent time with the Kelowna Rockets in the Western Hockey League (WHL) during the 2018-19 season. He led all Rockets’ defensemen with 17 goals and 24 assists for 41 points in 63 games, ranking fourth among Rockets’ skaters. Thomson was named to the WHL West Second All-Star Team.

Internationally, Thomson has represented Finland on numerous occasions, including the Men’s 18’s and the World Juniors. He captained Finland at the 2019-20 World Junior Championship, registering three assists in seven games. Thomson also captured a gold medal with Finland at the U18’s.
