“Huge Blow” as oldham reportedly confirms the departure of another top superstar

Oldham Athletic defender  has departed the National League team to join new club on a free transfer, as announced through a social media post from the Welsh side.

McGahey’s contract with Oldham Athletic expired after the 2023/24 season, and although his departure from the club was not previously verified, it has now been disclosed that he has indeed left.

How did McGahey perform last season?

The defender played in 25 matches in the National League last season, starting 23 of them for Oldham. During that period, he did not contribute to any goals but was involved in keeping seven clean sheets.

When looking at his detailed statistics, McGahey averaged 11.2 ball recoveries and 3.6 interceptions per 90 minutes, and maintained a passing success rate of 79% throughout the campaign with the National League team.

He initially joined Oldham from Scunthorpe United in 2021, and has now secured the next stage of his career.

What is he expected to bring to TNS?

McGahey is making the transition from the National League to a team vying for a spot in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers, marking a distinctive new phase in his professional journey.

Having previously played for Oldham, Scunthorpe United, and Sheffield United, the defender is anticipated to elevate the quality of the Welsh side in the upcoming season.

Is this a setback for Oldham?

Oldham Athletic’s official retained list indicates that 19 players are still contracted for the 2024/25 season, although one of them, Mark Shelton, has already departed to join league rivals Barnet.

The presence of players like Shaun Hobson, Mark Kitching, and Charlie Raglan already under contract suggests that the club has a substantial number of options available to them, implying that McGahey’s departure may not have a significant impact on the club.
