Cougars Reevaluating Quarterback Choices Ahead of Matchup with Iowa State
Houston coach Willie Fritz appears open to making changes at the quarterback position moving forward. The Cougars’ first-year head coach replaced Donovan Smith with Zeon Chriss early in the second half of the 34-0 loss to Cincinnati.
“We need to go back to the drawing board,” Fritz said regarding the offense and QB change, “and see this competition we are going to have, and play the right guys and have those guys do things they are capable of, and not have them do things they are not capable of.”
The Cougars’ passing game struggled to establish any rhythm. Quarterback Donovan Smith completed 11-of-16 passes for 73 yards, but aside from a 52-yard completion to Joseph Manjack IV, the team failed to connect on any pass longer than eight yards. Backup Zeon Chriss entered the game in the third quarter and finished 2-of-5 for 19 yards, as Houston leaned more on the ground game afterward.
With a record of 1-3 and 0-1 in the Big 12, Houston prepares for its conference home opener against Iowa State next Saturday. The Cougars aim to bounce back from the shutout, similar to how they defeated Baylor last year after being held scoreless by Kansas State.
