Her family is pursuing over $10 million in damages, as stated in a lawsuit.
The family of a Northeastern University student is taking legal action against her sorority, its president, and a landlord following her fall from a second-floor window that left her with “catastrophic” injuries.
Sarah Cox, who was a junior at the Boston institution, attended a party in March 2023 at a house affiliated with her sorority, Alpha Epsilon Phi.
According to a lawsuit obtained by ABC News, Cox was in a kitchen filled with partygoers when she “fell out of a window onto the driveway below.”
The fall was at least 20 feet, as noted in the lawsuit.
Cox sustained “catastrophic and permanent injuries” from the incident and currently lives in a nursing home where she receives care.
Her family is pursuing over $10 million in compensation. The lawsuit claims that her parents’ lives have been “dramatically altered” as they are now required to care for and support every aspect of Sarah’s life around the clock on a permanent basis.
The suit also asserts that due to the seriousness of her injuries, Sarah will have to depend on her parents indefinitely.
In response, the defendants have requested the dismissal of the lawsuit, arguing that the plaintiffs “cannot identify or explain the cause of Sarah Cox’s fall” and that the claims are merely “speculative.”The defendants’ legal team stated in court documents that there are no allegations linking the actions of the sorority defendants to Cox’s purported injury, nor are there any factual claims suggesting that the sorority defendants played a role in causing the fall.
