The Nashville Predators stirred up excitement by trading top goalie prospect Yaroslav Askarov to the San Jose Sharks. The decision came after Nashville established their goalie duo for the season, and Askarov expressed he wouldn’t report to the AHL if assigned there.
After requesting a trade, several teams showed interest, including the New Jersey Devils, Montreal Canadiens, Colorado Avalanche, and Utah Hockey Club. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman highlighted the competition among teams eager to acquire the promising goalie.
The Avalanche, a strong NHL team, have a need for improved goaltending depth, as starter Alexandar Georgiev has played heavily over the past two seasons. Meanwhile, Justus Annunen may take on more games, but he lacks the proven talent of Askarov.
Although Utah has a solid fan base, trading Askarov there could enhance the franchise’s appeal as they seek a future star. Additionally, rumors about Karel Vejmelka being on the trade block do not align with Nashville’s needs, as he could find himself in a similar position to Askarov.
Ultimately, the Sharks present the best opportunity for Askarov. While the 2024-25 season may bring challenges, the emerging talents of Askarov, Macklin Celebrini, and Will Smith could help the Sharks evolve into a formidable team in the Western Conference.
