Head coach Sherrone Moore explains why Michigan Football recruited Talented QB: the college football recruiting community is shocked

When Michigan pulled five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood from his commitment to LSU, it shocked a lot of the college football recruiting community. However, the Wolverines’ other quarterback moves in the 2025 recruiting class also attracted attention.

The addition of Cincinnati (Ohio) St. Xavier quarterback Chase Herbstreit, the son of former Ohio State Buckeye quarterback Kirk Herbstreit and ESPN college football analyst, also caused a stir for head coach Sherrone Moore and the Wolverines.Wolverine fans were taken aback by the addition of a second quarterback in the 2025 class because Underwood was already in the fold and Michigan’s interest in Herbstreit was not well-publicized. Additionally, some Ohio State supporters were incensed and critical of the Herbstreit family.

Moore was questioned at a press conference prior to Michigan’s forthcoming ReliaQuest Bowl game against No. 11 Alabama about how the Wolverines recruited Herbstreit and what part he might play in the quarterback room moving forward.

We’ve had Chase on our radar for some time, and he had a successful career at St. X, Moore said. “I know Kirk quite well, of course, but it was more about Chase and his skills and how he could support our team in the future. We’ve built a relationship with him and believe he will contribute to the team in some way.

“Yeah, you engage with the parents as much as I do with any other parent because you are always around them. Moore stated, “There is undoubtedly that interaction there.”

The Michigan program hasn’t had this much success against the Buckeyes since the late 1980s and early 1990s. It’s hard enough for that southern fan base to accept the Wolverines winning four straight games against Ohio State. The son of one of the most well-known former Buckeyes is now also dedicated to the Maize and Blue.
