Many Tar Heel supporters anticipated that fourth-year head coach Hubert Davis would heavily depend on the 19-year-old from Pittsboro, N.C., for important contributions and substantial playing time in the frontcourt, an area where the team needed added length and size.
Overall, Powell largely lived up to these expectations and became a crucial part of the UNC basketball program. He started 24 games for the 2024-25 Tar Heels, and his playing time increased notably as the season came to a close.
The 6-foot-6, 195-pound player averaged 7.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game, achieving a shooting percentage of 48.3% overall and 37.9% from beyond the arc. One of his standout performances took place in early January during an 82-67 win against SMU, where he scored 17 points with a shooting line of 6-for-13 from the field and 4-for-6 from three-point range, while also contributing four rebounds and two assists.
It remains uncertain where Drake Powell will play next season. Pursuing a professional career appears to be a genuine option, as he frequently appears in mock drafts as a potential first or second-round pick. However, if he decides to return to Chapel Hill, he could become a key player for the team next season.
