Hawkeyes lose wide receiver Reece Vander Zee to unusual injury
The Iowa Hawkeyes are just days away from kicking off the 2025 college football season, but have been hit with a blow to the wide receiver room with an injury.
Reece Vander Zee, the sophomore from Rock Rapids, Iowa, is expected to miss time due to a foot injury he sustained recently.
The news comes from Matt Zenitz and David Eickholt of CBS Sports. They have reported that Vander Zee suffered a “freak” foot injury, which will sideline him for about a month at the beginning of the Hawkeyes’ season.
Reece Vander Zee was listed as the second-string wide receiver on the Hawkeyes’ Week 1 depth chart behind the trio of Jacob Gill, Seth Anderson, and Sam Phillips.

Reece Vander Zee saw time last year for the Hawkeyes in his freshman season and made his entrance in quite spectacular fashion. He reeled in five receptions for 65 yards and two touchdowns in the opener against Illinois State last year.
On the season, Vander Zee appeared in nine games as he was hampered by the injury bug last year as well. He tallied 14 receptions for 176 yards and three touchdowns.
His absence opens the door for Sam Phillips, the transfer from Chattanooga, and Seth Anderson, a Charleston Southern transfer, to stake their claim in the starting lineup alongside Jacob Gill. Others who could see action with this injury include the potential for increased time for Kaden Wetjen and KJ Parker, each of who are listed as a second-string wide receiver.
