The SF Giants rewarded one of their undrafted free agents with a much-deserved promotion to Triple-A. Wil Jensen was moved up to the Sacramento River Cats after spending parts of the past three seasons with the Richmond Flying Squirrels, per a team announcement.
After the 2020 season, Jensen became an undrafted free agent and signed with the team. The COVID-19 pandemic caused that draft to be truncated to five rounds, which gave undrafted athletes a time to look for their best chances to play.
The Giants selected seven players in that year’s draft, including Kyle Harrison, Casey Schmitt, and Patrick Bailey. They added Jensen and Brett Auerbach as a result of their aggressiveness in the undrafted free-agent market. Auerbach was just promoted to Triple-A by the Giants in order to bolster a roster that has been severely injured for the major league team.
During his four years at Pepperdine, Jensen pitched mostly out of the rotation and had a 3.03 ERA. He has consistently contributed as a pro in each minor league trip. He has a 3.11 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 9.6 K/9, and a 3.14 SO/W ratio over four minor league seasons. Among them is a fantastic 1.91 ERA he had with Richmond before to his promotion in 13 games this season.
He began his career with the Giants as a starter in the lower minors but has since moved to the bullpen. The 26-year-old can produce a low-90s fastball on the mound along with a curveball, changeup, and slider. Although he can throw all four pitches for strikes, his preferred backup offering is the slider.
Jensen’s velocity is not overwhelming. Nevertheless, he is skilled at pitch sequencing to keep opposition hitters off balance. His profiles tend to favor pitchability over other factors.
With a 29-21 record in the Pacific Coast League, the River Cats are off to an unexpectedly good start under the right-handed pitcher’s tutelage. Sacramento finds methods to win even with a thin roster. The River Cats might use some reinforcements since they recently added Cody Stashak and Landen Roupp to their injured list.
