Good News: Bruins Defenseman Receive Big Honour
The Boston Bruins are looking to bounce back in the 2025-26 season after a disappointing 2024-25 campaign. A key factor in turning things around will be the development and progression of their young talent.
Heading into the new season, the Bruins have several intriguing breakout candidates, including Fraser Minten, Matt Poitras, Marat Khusnutdinov, and Fabian Lysell.
But in a recent piece for NHL.com, writer Troy Perlowitz highlighted defenseman Mason Lohrei as Boston’s top fantasy breakout pick. Perlowitz believes Lohrei is poised to post new offensive career highs in 2025-26, building on the strides he made last season with the storied franchise.
Considering that Mason Lohrei is heading into just his third NHL season with only 118 games under his belt, there’s plenty of reason for optimism about his continued development. He’s still adapting to the pace and demands of the NHL, but showed encouraging progress offensively last season. In 77 games, he tallied five goals, 28 assists, and 33 points — a solid step forward.
That said, like many young defensemen, Lohrei faced challenges on the defensive side of the puck. If he can build on his offensive output while improving his reliability in his own zone, it would be a major boost for a Bruins team aiming to return to playoff form. As a 2020 second-round pick, Lohrei clearly has strong potential, and the 2025-26 season could be the one where he truly breaks through.
The Boston Bruins are just 51 days out from kicking off their season against the Washington Capitals.
