Good News as Patrick Mahomes Updates Ankle Injury Status, Practice Plan for QB

Patrick Mahomes provided an update on his ankle injury status on Wednesday, while Andy Reid outlined the practice plan for the Chiefs’ QB.

During a tense moment in the game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes went down after throwing a touchdown pass, raising concerns among fans at Arrowhead Stadium. Although he was briefly assisted off the field, Mahomes managed to return to the game without missing any offensive snaps.

Following the game, Mahomes acknowledged that he expected some swelling and soreness as the team prepared for their upcoming matchup against the Denver Broncos. On Wednesday, he shared an update on his ankle’s condition just before participating in practice for the first time since the injury.

“It’s doing good,” Mahomes stated. “Obviously, when you have a little bit of a roll it’s a little bit sore, but I’m able to move around, and I look forward to getting out at practice and seeing how I can push it as the week goes on.”

When asked about his recovery process since the injury, Mahomes explained, “You can only do so much.” After the game, he utilized treatment options in the training room and applied methods to reduce swelling overnight. He emphasized the importance of preparing for the short week and his practice that day.

During his Wednesday press conference, head coach Andy Reid confirmed that Mahomes would not need to limit his practice repetitions, saying, “No, [he] won’t have to back off.” Reid noted that Mahomes effectively manages his condition.

Furthermore, after Monday’s game, Mahomes compared his current injury to the high ankle sprain he suffered in January 2023, expressing optimism about his ability to practice in the upcoming week. “I still have mobility in my ankle,” he said, indicating that he did not feel the same level of pain as with his previous injury. He added that while he might experience some swelling, he is committed to taking care of it and being ready to play next week.
