Given the timing, the addition of Dell McGee was a positive move, although it may take some time for its full impact to be evident at Georgia State. His strong recruiting abilities, which he was unable to utilize this time around, will be beneficial. Currently, the situation might be similar to a “Year Zero” scenario.
Looking ahead to Georgia State’s Offense in 2024
The departure of former Georgia State head coach Shawn Elliott during spring practice was a surprising event during the off-season. Fortunately, the Panthers were able to bring in Georgia associate head coach Dell McGee, previously a successful high school coach in the state, to replace Elliott. Because of the timing of these changes, the roster is currently in a state of uncertainty.
Nevertheless, it is highly likely that the Panthers will rely on Georgia Tech transfer Zach Gibson as their starting quarterback. While Gibson did not play for the Yellow Jackets in 2023, he did make three starts in 2022.
Another interesting addition to the roster is former Coastal Carolina running back CJ Beasley, who transferred to Georgia State. Beasley was a versatile contributor for the Chanticleers, gaining just under 1,000 yards rushing and 344 yards receiving over the past two seasons.
Additionally, the Panthers have returning running back Freddie Brock, who earned his first start in Georgia State’s bowl game. Brock showcased his skills by rushing for 276 yards on 24 carries in that game. It’s evident that both Beasley and Brock are likely to play significant roles in the team’s offense.
