Giants announce big news ahead of Week 18

The New York Giants will have Drew Lock as their starter against the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving, as Tommy DeVito has been moved to the emergency quarterback role due to a forearm injury he sustained during Sunday’s 30-7 defeat against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Adam Schefter and Jordan Raanan from ESPN were the first to report that Lock would be starting against the Cowboys. Raanan had earlier indicated on Wednesday that DeVito was deemed a “longshot” to play. Mike Garafolo from NFL Network added that DeVito would be traveling to Dallas separately from the team for further testing on his forearm.

DeVito exited Sunday’s game for a play in the fourth quarter after getting the wind knocked out of him, but he couldn’t recall exactly when the forearm injury took place. “I don’t really remember a specific play,” he told reporters. “It’s kind of just adding up all the hits.”

Initially, DeVito was not listed on the Giants’ injury report released on Monday, but he was added on Tuesday as a limited participant. Since the team only had a walkthrough on Wednesday instead of a full practice, their injury report was an estimation of what they expected to happen, and DeVito was listed as not participating.

Sunday marked DeVito’s first start of the season after the Giants decided to release Daniel Jones. At just 26 years old, DeVito had previously become a cult figure in New York after leading the team to a three-game winning streak last season. However, he wasn’t able to replicate that success this time around, with the Giants suffering their third-worst offensive performance of the season, tallying only 245 total yards and seven points. This also marked their third loss by at least 20 points.

Lock is set to make his first start of the season after appearing in three games already, during which he attempted only nine passes, completing four for nine yards. The 28-year-old is in his sixth NFL season, holding a record of 9-14 as a starter, with 28 touchdowns and 23 interceptions over 31 career games.

The Giants and Cowboys will face off on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. ET at AT&T Stadium. Interestingly, the Giants haven’t secured a road victory against Dallas since Week 1 of the 2016 season
