Georgia’s Head Coach Kirby Smart Made Honest Admission After NFL Draft
Mykel Williams, an edge rusher for the Georgia Bulldogs, showcased his exceptional athleticism and physical play during three seasons with the team.
He declared for the NFL draft several months ago, and on Thursday, he was selected with the No. 11 overall pick by the San Francisco 49ers.
Now, he joins one of the NFL’s storied franchises, which is just 14 months removed from nearly clinching a victory in Super Bowl LVIII. Kirby Smart, his head coach at Georgia, shared a farewell message on X.
“The time has finally come @MykelWilliams_!!” Smart tweeted. “You’re going to have a long career ahead, and we wish you all the best on this exciting next chapter of your journey. I can’t wait to see what you accomplish with the @49ers and to follow your progress at the next level. GO DAWGS !!”

Williams is recognized for his explosive style of play, showcasing impressive burst and physicality. Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 260 pounds, he has the ideal size for the defensive end role at the next level. Scouts view him as a player with significant potential who is still developing.
A scouting report on NFL.com described him as “an upside prospect with ample traits; Williams just needs more snaps and time to develop his physique,” highlighting his “explosive athleticism and remarkable length, which he uses to keep tackles and tight ends at bay.”

The 49ers, who finished last season with a 6-11 record plagued by numerous injuries, appear to be undergoing a mini-rebuild this offseason. If Williams reaches his potential, he could contribute significantly to enhancing their defensive line and is expected to be a strong run-stopper, a critical need for the team in recent years.
