Georgia Tech WR Who Caught TD in Miami Upset Reveals His ‘Papa’ Died Friday

What a day for senior Georgia Tech wide receiver Chase Lane. He only caught one pass in the Yellow Jackets’ stunning upset win over Miami on Saturday, but it was a 15-yarder that came midway through the third quarter, a sensational diving catch in the end zone that staked Tech to a 21-10 lead.

Georgia Tech would go on to thwart Miami’s comeback attempt and hold on for the 28-23 win on their home field, a game that moved the Jackets to bowl eligibility at 6-4 and dropped the Hurricanes from the ranks of the unbeaten.

Lane, a Texas A&M transfer who has 15 catches for 180 yards and three touchdowns on the season, saw a video replay of his catch on Twitter/X on Saturday evening. He used that platform to say that it was a bittersweet day for him.

“My papa passed away yesterday, this was for him!” Lane wrote. He then clarified that his “papa” is his grandfather.

It was certainly a signature win for Georgia Tech, which was dealing with the return of quarterback Haynes King and his shoulder injury by rushing for 271 yards, with just 99 passing yards.

“Good football game, if you believe in running the ball and stopping the run and time of possession,” Georgia Tech coach Brent Key said. “Those type of things still work. … Our guys played. They didn’t bat an eye. They didn’t flinch.”
