Georgia Tech names Tim Salem as the new special teams coach following the departure of associate head coach Ricky Brumfield, who didn’t travel with the team to Saturday’s 21-6 loss at Virginia Tech. In a brief announcement on Tuesday, Georgia Tech confirmed that Salem, a senior advisor to head coach Brent Key, will take over special teams duties. The program did not provide any details regarding Brumfield’s departure.
Head coach Key has openly expressed frustration over special teams issues, which have contributed to the Yellow Jackets’ two-game losing streak. Key did not explain Brumfield’s absence after Saturday’s game.
The special teams struggled notably in a recent 31-13 loss to Notre Dame, where a blocked 35-yard field goal attempt, a dropped snap, and a fake punt that allowed a 27-yard gain highlighted the team’s challenges. Afterward, Key remarked that special teams hadn’t met expectations for three weeks, emphasizing the critical need for improvement.
