“Major Uplift” as Kevin Keatts Sets Sights on Huge Recruit from Top-Ranked Center with Versatile Skill Set

The head coach of NC State’s basketball team started his Saturday by observing the performance of highly regarded center

Kevin Keatts and his NC State basketball recruiting staff were among the first to express interest in Sam Funches. They offered the talented player from Germantown High School (Mississippi) a scholarship in late August, several months prior to the beginning of his sophomore season.

Early on Saturday, Keatts was present bright and early to watch Funches play at the MADE Hoops August Live prep showcase in Georgia.

The experienced Wolfpack head coach, in his eighth year, was not the only coach in attendance for an 8 a.m. game featuring the 6-foot-11, 220-pound Funches, who is ranked as the No. 21 overall prospect and the top center on the 247Sports 2026 Composite. Coaches from Mississippi State, Kansas State, Gonzaga, Ole Miss, Appalachian State, and Abilene Christian were also observed at the event, as reported by Jeff Kovner, the director of events for MADE Hoops.

According to the 247Sports Composite, Funches is the most highly rated prospect and the sole five-star recruit on Kevin Keatts’ 2026 list of desired recruits.

NC State’s basketball offer list has expanded to include five individuals, including two other centers: Latrell Allmond, a four-star player from John Marshall High School (Virginia) who received an offer from the Wolfpack six weeks prior to Funches, and Cody Peck, a four-star player from Carmel Christian School (North Carolina) who is the most recent addition to Keatts’ list of prospects.
