Greg Sharpe, who served as the play-by-play announcer for Nebraska football since 2007, has passed away after battling cancer, as confirmed by his family through the school on Saturday. He was 61 years old.
Sharpe died on Friday, 10 months after revealing that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He managed to work several games during the previous season.
“While his passion and enthusiasm for calling Husker football and baseball brought joy to many over the past 17 seasons, we find comfort in knowing that his legacy will continue through the memorable moments he narrated and the relationships he fostered,” the family’s statement read. “While the public recognized him for his powerful voice and vibrant personality, those closest to him cherished his loyalty and commitment.”
For 17 years, Greg Sharpe spoke past the microphone and into our hearts.
His legacy will be woven into the moments he narrated and carried on through the relationships he built.

Greg Sharpe, who grew up in Olathe, Kansas, attended Kansas State University and served as the voice of K-State football and basketball from 1996 to 2002, was hired by Nebraska to announce the last three football games of the 2007 season. He was made the permanent announcer the following year.
In December, the National Sports Media Association honored him as Nebraska Sportscaster of the Year, and just last month, the athletic department named the press box workspace after him, designating it the “Greg Sharpe Radio Booth.”
“This is a difficult day for everyone,” said athletic director Troy Dannen. “It’s hard not only for those who were close to Greg and had the chance to work with him, but also for Husker fans who cherish Greg’s iconic calls of memorable moments in Nebraska’s history.
“Greg was an amazing person and a friend to all. In short, he exemplified what it meant to be a Husker, and he will always be remembered as one.”
Sharpe is survived by his wife, Amy, and their daughters Emily, Campbell, and Taylor
