In fall camp, no news is usually good news — which is why LSU fans were quick to worry when word spread a few weeks ago that quarterback Garrett Nussmeier had gone down during practice.
Fortunately, it turned out to be nothing serious. Nussmeier has since returned to full participation without any lingering issues.
“He’s 100% healthy,” head coach Brian Kelly confirmed Monday on The Paul Finebaum Show. “Like with any player during camp, especially your quarterback, you want to be cautious and smart with how you manage them.”
Nussmeier, seen as a potential Heisman contender, is central to LSU’s hopes of making a return to the College Football Playoff. His leadership and playmaking will be crucial.
Given that, it’s understandable that Kelly and his staff are taking extra care. And that caution is paying off.
“We’ve been in camp for three weeks now, so naturally there are days you ease up,” Kelly said. “But he’s fully healthy and in a great spot. We just awarded him the No. 18 jersey — a symbol of leadership and team-first mentality — and we’re thrilled to have him leading this team.”
