From South Alabama to Gold Glove Glory: Former South Alabama standout nominated for another Gold Glove

Brendan Donovan of the St. Louis Cardinals is one of three finalists for the Gold Glove Award in the National League for utility players for the 2024 season.

The Gold Glove Awards are presented annually in both the American and National Leagues to recognize the best fielder at each position.

The utility Gold Glove was introduced in 2022, with Donovan winning the inaugural award in the National League. Additionally, he finished third in the voting for the National League Rookie of the Year Award that same season.

Ligament damage in his throwing arm curtailed Donovan’s second season, leading to surgery after he played in 95 games in 2023.

In the 2024 season, Donovan participated in 105 games in left field, 53 at second base, nine at third base, and one in right field. Throughout his first two seasons, he also played first base and shortstop.

This season, Donovan managed 167 chances in the outfield—completing 164 putouts and three assists—without committing an error. At second base, he recorded one error in 211 chances, and at third base, he had one error in 16 chances.

The other nominees for the utility Gold Glove in the National League include Kike Hernandez of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Jared Triolo of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Gold Glove Award winners will be announced on Nov. 3. Major League Baseball revealed the three finalists for each position in each league on Tuesday.
